If you were to travel back in time 20 years, would you be the same age or 20 years younger? Furthermore what if you are under 20? do you exist?

First and foremost, time is a vector, meaning that it has both direction and magnitude (albeit the magnitude in this case is infinite).

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that time is infinite in extent since it depends on how you define it. If you believe that the beginning of time coincides with the beginning of our universe, and you buy into the big bang theory then we can theoretically come up with a start time. So what about an end time? Well, if time is dependent on the universe existing, we don't know whether or not time has an end. This all depends on how fast the universe is expanding, if it's expanding too slowly it will collapse back on itself into a singularity where time ends, but could restart as another big bang. If the universe is expanding quickly enough then I suppose time could go on forever.

I agree that time travel to the past is likely beyond the realm of possibilities, but time travel to the future, as it appears to the person traveling is most definitely possible. Remember the twin's paradox? Shoot one twin off in a space ship at speeds approaching the speed of light and when he returns he will have aged less than his brother. To the twin that has traveled at such speeds, he has traveled in time. This is because there is no single measure of time; each observer has their 'own time'. This can even be proven on Earth on a smaller scale simply with the gravity gradient of the earth.

Hey Kevin!

I am glad that there is someone else contributing to this forum. Hopefully things will pick up as we get more visitors onboard.

From reading your post I take that you are not thoroughly convinced with the Big Bang theory, even though it is in accordance with Einstein's Relativity and modern theoretical physics. What do you believe in?

Assuming that the Big Bang was the point in time that the Universe was created, then there is a starting point for time, not a theoretical one. However, there is no possible way for the universe to collapse on itself forming a singularity, as this violates the second law of thermodynamics (I think its the second law, but you might want to check!). The law basically states that things move from organized states to chaotic, and not in reverse. This implies that the Universe is moving towards a more chaotic state, and can never return to the organized level of a singularity. Based on this knowledge Time is infinite.

I am glad that you agree with me on Time travel Smile

Oh no, I definitely agree with the big bang, sorry I didn't make that clear!

Well, from what I understand, if the universe isn't expanding at some critical rate, it will eventually slow to the point where gravity can pull it all back together. If everything is moving away from the center fast enough, then it could expand forever and thus time would never end. If it does collapse on itself then you'd have yourself a new singularity to have yet another big bang.

There is no time. It's an illusion. There is only a "now", not a then. Time travel is theoretically impossible...

...At least, according to Peter Lynds...

Apparently Einstein was wrong. I hope I understood that right.
